CAPE TOWN – Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane was concerned about the state in which the students were currently living.
She was on an oversight visit earlier last month to institutions of higher learning in Cape Town to assess the situation at campuses. Her visit cameafter student protests at various universities across the country.
Nkabane spoke to journalists at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology campus. “I thought I must come and assess the situation myself and I was very disturbed to see the conditions in which our students are living, because here at CPUT they are utilizing the student centre as the place where they sleep, and they sleep on the floor.”
Nkabane announced plans to assist about 80 CPUT students who haven’t been given accommodation yet.
The minister took a decision to move them to temporary accommodation support system since they were living in unconducive environment for studying.
